American Airlines making it rain with $8.4 billion on new planes

Okay, get this American airline has predicted that they will spend $8.4 billion on new planes between 2020 and 2024. They hope to raise money through a loan via the CARES Act. But they also hope they can raise $1.5 billion through the sales of their shares. One thing that had everyone worried was their daily cash burn which was totalled at $40 million, but that has since started to drop to a more manageable level.

Even though investing in new aircraft now would be a ridiculous decision, but they’re still full steam ahead at the moment with their fleet renewal and still hope to receive these aircraft this year:

  • One used Airbus A319
  • 18 Airbus A321neos
  • 12 Boeing 787-8s
  • 22 Boeing 737 MAXs

Whether that happens or not is another story, but they have confirmed that they will not take delivery of any MAX aircraft until Boeing has fixed the MCAS system. American made a huge order last year in Paris with 50 A321XLR being ordered as a replacement for the rapidly ageing 757s. While other airlines are using this time to reevaluate their fleet and staff for the short term, American Airlines seems to be still thinking about the long term.
